  • Tripod and all Mounting Plates
  • Laptop, all chords, card reader, external hard drive
  • Small Flashlight
  • Filters Such as Polarizing and ND Filters

Travel information
Please be aware that you will need transportation to and from Skowhegan. While there, we will carpool to minimize on the amount of vehicles.

Hotel information
We will be staying at The Towne Motel, 172 Madison Ave, Skowhegan, ME 04976 (207) 474-5151. Please note: Your rooms are not included in the cost of your ticket.   You MUST call the hotel and secure a room IN THE ROOM BLOCK.  Please be at the hotel by 2pm on August 15th.

Clothing

It is summer.  Dress accordingly.  Days can be hot and evenings perhaps chilly.  At the Fairgrounds, we will encounter dust and dirt so, care for your camera as well as yourself.  Mosquitoes may be an issue so, dress accordingly and have bug spray.  Hats and sunglasses for the heat of mid day.  Boots/hiking shoes that are good in mud, dirt, dust.  Sneakers or open toe sandals not advised.

Refund Policy – Adventures

For most Photo Adventures, a deposit of 25% of the total cost of the workshop is required to hold a spot. Please note: Deposits are non-refundable, but you can receive a 50% credit toward a future adventure. Within 45-days, all payments are non-transferable.
For Photo Adventures under $1,000, we may only have the total cost payment option. In this case, 25% is non-refundable.
For national adventures (excluding Alaska), final payments are due one month prior to the start of the workshop.
For international adventures (and Alaska), final payments are due 90-days prior to the start of the workshop. We strongly encourage travel insurance!

Summer is a time of outdoor activity for farmers, families, and communities.  Many communities host events such as fairs that provide education, entertainment, and a sense of community to any and all visitors.  Skowhegan Maine has hosted the Skowhegan State Fair since 1818.  For over two hundred year’s, farmers have gathered here to learn aspects of farming, share their knowledge, and show off their skills.  For nearly as long, families have flocked to the Fair to witness first hand the traditions of farming and agriculture.  The results are an eclectic mix of people and activities that set the stage for exciting photography.

Our Weekend Thesis:

The Fair, and all of its activities, are centered around farming, people, and families.   Our goal will be to capture the essence and spirit of the Skowhegan State Fair through a pictorial essay.  Each attendee will create images as they see and feel the event as a whole. 

 

The Skowhegan State Fair

Founded in 1818, the Skowhegan State Fair is one of the oldest agricultural fairs in the country.  On the fair grounds, there will be many vendors, displays, and contests to inform, educate, and entertain the thousands of people and families that attend the fair.  Typically, there are activities such as livestock competitions, tractor pulls, live music, a demolition derby, food, games of chance, and more that we will photograph.

  1. We will work on telling the story of the Skowhegan State Fair
  2. We will photograph people, livestock, buildings, emotion, and action
  3. We will work with color
  4. We will work with monochrome
  5. We will work with great depth of field
  6. We will work with narrow depth of field
  7. We will take our time and be patient
  8. We will work to find our creative voice

 

To further push your creative ideas, vision, and boundaries there will be an online image review of 4 images each on Sept 4th.  The images you submit must be fully edited final images for sharing, discussion, and critique.

During our time in Skowhegan we may visit other locations (such as an apple orchard or downtown Skowhegan) to add to our creative experience.

Breakfast will be locally in a coffee shop.  Lunches will be at the Fairgrounds.  Dinners will be at local restaurants.
