We’ll explore how creative choices influence mood\, energy\, and emotion—helping you capture not just what a subject looks like\, but what it feels like. \nIn Intermediate Photography – Getting the Look\, we’ll go beyond exposure and focus on crafting photographs with intention. Through hands-on exercises\, we’ll explore how to use color theory\, light and shadow\, and compositional techniques to enhance storytelling and create photographs with mood and impact. By the end of the class\, you’ll feel more confident in making creative choices that give your images their own distinct look and feel. \nTaking our Beginner Photography OR Digital Photo Basics 1 and 2 classes (or equivalent experience) is recommended prior to this course.

Join Hunt’s Photo Education for a 6-session photography program aimed at strengthening their interest\, improving their photography\, and getting them truly excited about being the artist\, the creator\, and the family photographer! \nOver the course of six sessions\, we will cover a wide range of topics\, from composition & perspective to depth of field & movement. In every session we’ll have a brief introduction to a topic followed by a fun practical exercise. Our goal is to get your photographers taking pictures as much as possible! At the end of each session\, we’ll give an assignment for the following week\, and at the start of the next session\, we’ll look back on the images to see what we liked about them. \nOur goal in this program is to have a lot of fun and not bog students down with too much technical stuff. However\, we will also scaffold instruction\, so if an attendee wants to know more about the technical aspects\, they still can! Please note: This course is geared towards students aged 11-16 years old. Our age requirement is general and a certain maturity level is helpful.  Younger students with interest and a level of responsibility are welcome to attend. \nStudents will be required to have some kind of camera. We generally recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera\, but if you’re unsure\, feel free to contact us at classes@huntsphoto.com \nThis will be a fun program with experienced instruction. Specifically\, we will cover:\n•Brief Computer File Management\n•Importance of Keywords\n•Attributes– flagging\, rating\, color coding\n•Searching metadata to find images\n•And more!\nLightroom is an extremely robust and important manager of files\, and knowing how to utilize it is paramount to being able to find and edit your images! \nThis course is an excellent lead in to our Editing in Adobe Lightroom Classic classes.\n \n \nAn important note about this course! There are now a few different versions of Adobe Lightroom right now.This course is specifically on Adobe Lightroom Classic. The other version of Lightroom\, commonly known as “Adobe Lightroom CC” (yes\, we understand you may be confused by this) is a more mobile and cloud-based program. The look and feel of the program is completely different– This course is specifically on Adobe Lightroom Classic. (See graphic on the right.) DESCRIPTION:Spend the day with Master Photographer\, Photographic Craftsmen\, Certified Professional Photographer –Paula Swift owner of Paula Swift Photography\, Inc. in Sudbury\, MA as she shares over 29+ years of experience as a professional photographer. \nGet hands-on as you learn studio lighting for newborn sessions. While many photographers are teaching natural or constant light in this area\, Paula shows how and why studio lighting is her way to go. \nYou’ll also learn how to prepare for a shoot\, including client consultation\, props and light set ups. Explore techniques to help throughout the session such as soothing and safety tips\, posing for both family and baby\, how to put everyone at ease\, as well as lenses and lighting methods that work easily and beautifully for new baby sessions. \nTake advantage of Paula’s expertise and experience to learn more about newborns and how to photograph them beautifully\, using studio light properly. \n  \nAbout Paula: \nPaula Swift\, M.Photog\, Cr.\, CPP started her portrait photography business in Framingham\, MA in 2004 and then moved into a new studio in Sudbury\, MA in December 2013. Paula is the recent Past President of the Professional Photographers Assocation of Masschusetts – PPAM (2021-2023)\, a PPA Councilor and PPA Approved Juror. \nPaula was a staff photographer at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette in Worcester\, Mass from 1995-2005. Three of Paula’s images were part of a Pulitzer nomination and finalist entry in 2000 in feature photography for the photography staff’s coverage of the deadly Worcester warehouse fire that took the lives of six firefighters in 1999. Her photography has appeared in the Boston Globe\, New York Times\, LA Times\, Esquire\, People\, Time\, Newsweek and internationally via the Associated Press wire service \nHer portrait photography has won her two Kodak Gallery Awards\, a Hallmark Award\, Photographic Degree of Excellence by PPAM\, Loan and General Collections at IPC. ­­ In 2024\, \, Paula was recognized as Platinum Medalist\,  a Silver Medalist in 2022  and in 2014\, 2018\, 2019\, 2020 a Bronze Medalist for her photography at the Professional Photographers of America International Photographic Competition. \nIn May 2017\, Paula’s book Storytelling Portrait Photography: How to Document the Lives of Children and Families published. The book offers ideas for creating a strong and lasting client connection\, eliciting memorable moments\, finding storytelling locations\, inspiring natural action and reactions\, and capturing the inter-relationships between siblings and between children and their parents. \nPaula was born in Newport News\, Virgina and grew up Longmeadow\, Mass where she first learned to develop film in her parents’ basement with her big sister Gina who is a LA Times photographer.  She attended Fitchburg State University where she received her Bachelors of Science in Communications Media – Photography in 1995. Paula lives in Framingham\, Mass. with her husband Chris and their three sons. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This is a 3-part workshop.\nPart 1- Online Introduction- Wednesday March 25th\, 7pm \nPart 2- The Workshop- Sunday April 12th\, 10am-1pm\nPart 3- Online Image Review- TBD\nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education and photographer & artist Jonathan Pitts Wiley for Analog Adventures\, a unique film photo workshop! \nIn this series we will have dual goals— To work and get more comfortable with analog film and to explore storytelling through creating dynamic images. Attendees do NOT need to have extensive experience shooting film\, but should own and use a film camera. (It’s ok to bring a digital camera\, but the emphasis of this workshop is analog photography.)\n\nThe series kicks off with “Mirror Mirror”\, a session where we will work on portraits by photographing each other as subjects! The best way to learn about how to pose and direct your subject is to be a subject yourself\, and that’s what this workshop aims to do. Conducted out of our Hunt’s Providence location in a studio atmosphere using LED continuous lighting\, session attendees will walk away with a better understanding of what makes a successful portrait and how to execute it–not to mention some great shots of themselves!\n\n\nA bit of info on Analog Adventures– Each of these workshops will begin with a brief online introductory class prior where we will meet and discuss the topic. Anyone is free to attend this presentation\, so if you’re interested and unsure\, come on in!\nDuring the workshop\, we will work with your film camera and discuss all many elements of the topic.\nAfter the workshop\, attendees will individually develop and scan their own film. (You can develop and scan it on your own\, drop it off at Hunt’s for an additional charge\, or take one of Hunt’s Photo Education’s film developing classes.) We will then reconvene about a month later for an image review\, where attendees will be able to submit a small handful of images that they took during the workshop for review.\n\nPlease note: As mentioned above\, these workshops are designed for film cameras. SUMMARY:Developing Black & White Film- Hunt's Photo Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we discuss all the key elements of loading and developing film\, and get you to develop a roll on your own! In this workshop\, we will show you how to load film into a developing tank\, discuss the elements of the chemistry involved\, and other various aspects. Because of the many variables\, we will only be using one specific type of developer\, but we will discuss the possibilities of other developers available and their advantages. \nPlease note: This class caters to black & white film developing only! We will also have a color film developing class. All film classes can be found here. \nWe will provide tanks\, reels\, chemistry\, and basically anything that you need to develop your film. All you will need to have is a roll of film to develop. (Make sure that roll is black and white and NOT C-41 black and white\, as that cannot be developed in black and white chemistry!) \nWe will also include a free scan of your film after it has been processed! Since your film will be wet at the end of the session\, you will leave it to dry so it can be scanned. The digital scans will be sent directly to your email address. If you would like the negatives to be shipped to another store for pickup\, we can gladly do that!

DESCRIPTION:Introduction on Printing in Black & White- Wednesday April 8th\, 6:30pm ET • Online! \nPrint Review- Wednesday April 15th\, 6:30pm ET • Hunt’s Melrose or Online! \nThe printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product. \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Printing in Black & White! \nBlack & White printing is classic. It evokes in us certain emotions\, opinions\, senses\, and more. \nPrinting in black & white can also require more forethought. By planning out one’s shot in advance and seeing in black & white\, the photographer has more opportunity to edit in black & white with intent. That being said\, black & whites can also be produced by happy accidents\, too! \nThis class will focus on editing for print in black & white and touch upon what images to consider that will make strong monochrome images. \nThis Print Review topic will meet for two sessions. In the first session\, we will discuss the topic– some of the key differences between paper surfaces– and present a variety of options for you to have your image printed. In between sessions 1 and 2\, attendees will independently process 1-2 images and submit them to the instructor for printing. Educator Paul Nelson will produce a recorded image review\, discussing paper options\, editing suggestions\, and more\, to be sent back to you leading up to the second session. Paul will then print images for the class. In the end\, you will receive a print of one of your edited images up to 13×19″ in size. (Please note: We are happy to make a larger or additional print outside of the class for an additional fee!) \nJoin us for an informative Printed Review class! \nA Note About The Printed Review Series \nOur Print Review Monthly is a chance to continue the print conversation over the course of many months. SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Dragging the Shutter and Other Creative Lighting Portrait Effects- Hunt's Photo\, Melrose
DESCRIPTION:Educators Paul Nelson and Henry Marte lead this fun and challenging workshop that delves into dragging the shutter\, motion\, and other creative lighting effects for portraits! Dragging the Shutter is a technique used where we keep the shutter of the camera open for longer in order to create a sense of movement. It is achieved using a combination of lighting tools and can create a myriad of effects where every photo is a unique creation! We will also work on other fun creative lighting techniques and tools\, including projection mounts\, fresnels\, gobos\, and adding artificial smoke to create depth.\nYou do not need to have any prior knowledge of how to achieve these effects. \nWe will specifically be using Nanlite and Aputure LED lights and Westcott strobes\, but the concepts can apply to any lights you own. \nThis will be a fun day of portraits and not to be missed! \nAbout Henry Marte\nHenry is a published photographer and credited filmmaker. He specializes in various forms of photography\, including portrait\, events\, headshots\, drone\, and commercial photography. Other than attending MassArt’s Documentary Film School\, he is almost entirely self taught. He runs a small media production studio called Marte Media\, based out of Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. Some of his clients include Spartan Race\, UMass Lowell\, Phillips Academy\, Navigation Brewing Company\, and more. Originally from NYC\, he now calls Lowell\, Massachusetts his home. He enjoys New York style pizza\, walks with a camera\, and hiking to active volcanoes.

DESCRIPTION:Come see your photography through the eyes of a kid and transform your toys into life size photos!\nIn this dual macro/still life class\, we’ll spend our day creating a variety of still life set ups\, unique macro scenarios\, different lighting techniques\, compositions\, and how to tell a story when working with toys. We will cover exposure\, composition\, how to use macro lenses and extension tubes\, how to set up lighting\, how to use light modifiers and more! \nWe will be bringing lots of toys and other props to photograph for this workshop. However\, we find in our macro workshops that our attendees value shooting some things of their own as much if not more than what we bring. So\, while we will have those toys and props\, feel free to bring your own!

SUMMARY:Developing Color Film- Hunt's Photo Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we discuss all the key elements of loading and developing film\, and get you to develop a roll on your own! In this workshop\, we will show you how to load film into a developing tank\, discuss the elements of the chemistry involved\, and other various aspects. Because of the many variables\, we will only be using one specific type of developer\, but we will discuss the possibilities of other developers available and their advantages. \nPlease note: This class caters to color/C-41 type film developing only! We will also have a black and white film developing class. All film classes can be found here. \nWe will provide tanks\, reels\, chemistry\, and basically anything that you need to develop your film. All you will need to have is a roll of film to develop. \nWe will also include a free scan of your film after it has been processed! Since your film will be wet at the end of the session\, you will leave it to dry so it can be scanned. The digital scans will be sent directly to your email address. If you would like the negatives to be shipped to another store for pickup\, we can gladly do that!

SUMMARY:Creating Cyanotypes Workshop- Hunt's Photo\, Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we dive into a workshop that will quite literally bring you back to the days of film and hand-printing!\nCyanotypes are quite literally BLUE prints that can be simply made by placing a negative on top of a piece of coated paper (or other material) under UV light (or the sun) for a period of time. Once washed in water\, the resulting print produces a brilliant blue image on a white background.\nWe will begin this workshop with a prerecorded session where we will discuss the process\, materials needed\, and the preparation to be working with the cyanotype chemistry (see notes below). We will also discuss how to create a digital negative. For this workshop\, we will be creating our own digital negatives from an inkjet printer\, so you don’t actually need a negative and you don’t need a printer\, as we will be printing them in the store. Finally\, we will also discuss what to print on. Because we will have the ability to coat a material\, be it paper or fabric\, you can use a variety of printing surfaces\, which will elaborate on.\nPlease note: This session will be recorded\, so if you’re signing up last minute\, you can still watch it!\nDuring the workshop\, we will dive into all these elements. We will go through the process of coating (and drying) papers and fabrics\, creating test and final prints\, and discussing additional elements to change the look of our final prints. This is a unique workshop that will emphasize creativity and process.\nA few items of note:\n• In this workshop\, we will be utilizing cyanotype chemistry\, consisting of ferric ammonium citrate (for light sensitivity) and potassium ferricyanide (for color). As described by the chemistry company Photographers Formulary\, “…[Potassium Ferricyanide] is not particularly toxic… [unless] placed in a strong acid solution; however\, strong acid is not used in the cyanotype process.”\n• Because we will be working with chemistry\, you must follow all instructions given regarding chemistry and personal protective equipment.\n• Because this chemistry can stain\, we will be taking precautions and wearing gloves. We strongly recommend bringing an apron\, one that you won’t mind if it changes colors.
