SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Urban Portraits Along the Riverwalk in Lowell with Natural Light (and Flash!)
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for another entry in our series of portrait workshops where we will be utilizing the natural\, urban environment to work into our portraits. Brick buildings and cityscapes will all work into our compositions as we create a more working class feel in our portraits–a very unique look. To a certain extent\, these will be environmental portraits where the environment plays a role in creating the scene. Utilizing your environment in photographs is key to creating a fun portrait shoot! We will emphasize creating these portraits using available light through subject placement and composition with the aid of diffusers and reflectors. We will then separately demonstrate reasons to add in flash.\nWe will begin photographing late afternoon in the sunlight (and shade) and work to sunset along the Merrimack River along the Riverwalk in Lowell. We will be using strobes/flashes as well as diffusers to create stunning portraits.\nThis workshop will be co-taught by Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson and professional photographer Henry Marte. Both have extensive portrait experience and will take you through the full process\, from naturally lighting a subject\, to how to properly expose while using strobes\, to how to actually use the strobes themselves!\nPhotographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nAbout Henry Marte\nHenry is a published photographer and credited filmmaker. He specializes in various forms of photography\, including portrait\, events\, headshots\, drone\, and commercial photography. Other than attending MassArt’s Documentary Film School\, he is almost entirely self taught. He runs a small media production studio called Marte Media\, based out of Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. Some of his clients include Spartan Race\, UMass Lowell\, Phillips Academy\, Navigation Brewing Company\, and more. Originally from NYC\, he now calls Lowell\, Massachusetts his home. He enjoys New York style pizza\, walks with a camera\, and hiking to active volcanoes.

SUMMARY:Online: Multi-Session Series- Creating Books and More: Preparing Images\, Creating Designs\, and Emphasizing Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This is a 2-part class that will meet on the dates listed above\nThat title is exhausting! And so it can also feel making a book\, a zine\, a calendar\, or even a print! There’s so much to the printing process that is foreign and never covered in standard courses\, and so in this course\, we will begin to cover some of the basics.\nIn this two session course\, we’ll discuss the following topics:\n-Organization- How to use your software (ANY software) to work for you to prepare your vision\n-Culling your images- Reducing the quantity of images you use to strengthen your end result\n-Pre-visualization- Begin to develop your storytelling journey by letting the images guide you!\n-Exporting & Importing- How do we bring the images out of the program we’re using and at what settings\n-Online options and standalone programs for building books\, calendars\, and more.\n-Layouts- What are some of the basic design elements that we can employee? What can be automated and what do we have to do from scratch?\n-Storytelling- This is the glue that holds the book together! (Figuratively\, not literally.) How do we keep interest for 20 pages? 50 pages? 100 pages? \nMuch of the conversation in this course will be demonstrated using Adobe Lightroom Classic\, but other programs (Capture One\, Apple Photos) can also be discussed and are just as applicable. \nA note about printing: Please be aware\, we will NOT be printing books in this class\, only showing the process. The printing will be up to you!

SUMMARY:Online: The Printed Vision- Printing on Rice Paper!
DESCRIPTION:The printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product. \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Printing on Rice Paper! \nRice paper is a style of paper that is delicate\, unique\, and tells a story! This is a fabulous style of paper that is underutilized in the printing world but can ultimately produce stellar and very different images! \nThis Print Review topic will meet for two sessions. In the first session\, we will discuss the topic– some of the key differences between paper surfaces\, considerations what images to choose to print on Rice Paper\, how to best edit your images\, paper selection\, and other important elements of making a print on Rice Paper.  Attendees will independently process 1-2 images and upload them to the instructor\, educator Paul Nelson\, for review. Paul will send back a video image review discussing what you did and how to improve your edits for print. Paul will then print images on two papers for comparison. You may choose to have the same image printed twice (recommended) or two separate images. Due to size restrictions of rice paper\, we will be limiting the size of these prints to no larger than 8.5 x 11\, although we are happy to make a larger print outside of the class for an additional fee. \nJoin us for this unique Printed Review class! \nA Note About The Printed Review Series \nOur Print Review Monthly is a chance to continue the print conversation over the course of many months. These sessions are excellent for anyone: \n• Someone that wants a little help with editing before they get a print \n• Someone that does print but has print-related questions \n• A person that prints often and wants to try a different paper \n• Someone with no knowledge of printing that just wants to get a print! \n  \nCome check out why printing is the best thing to do for your photography! \n  \nIn-Person or Online \nThis class will be taking place in-person in our Melrose store location and online\, in case you cannot attend live. If you cannot attend live\, your print can either be mailed to you or picked up at one of our Hunt’s Photo store locations.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Film Workshops: Analog Adventures- Mirror Mirror with Jonathan Pitts-Wiley- Hunt's Photo Providence
DESCRIPTION:This is a 3-part workshop.\nPart 1- Online Introduction- Wednesday March 25th\, 7pm \nPart 2- The Workshop- Sunday April 12th\, 10am-1pm\nPart 3- Online Image Review- TBD\nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education and photographer & artist Jonathan Pitts Wiley for Analog Adventures\, a unique film photo workshop! \nIn this series we will have dual goals— To work and get more comfortable with analog film and to explore storytelling through creating dynamic images. Attendees do NOT need to have extensive experience shooting film\, but should own and use a film camera. (It’s ok to bring a digital camera\, but the emphasis of this workshop is analog photography.)\n\nThe series kicks off with “Mirror Mirror”\, a session where we will work on portraits by photographing each other as subjects! The best way to learn about how to pose and direct your subject is to be a subject yourself\, and that’s what this workshop aims to do. Conducted out of our Hunt’s Providence location in a studio atmosphere using LED continuous lighting\, session attendees will walk away with a better understanding of what makes a successful portrait and how to execute it–not to mention some great shots of themselves!\n\n\nA bit of info on Analog Adventures– Each of these workshops will begin with a brief online introductory class prior where we will meet and discuss the topic. Anyone is free to attend this presentation\, so if you’re interested and unsure\, come on in!\nDuring the workshop\, we will work with your film camera and discuss all many elements of the topic.\nAfter the workshop\, attendees will individually develop and scan their own film. (You can develop and scan it on your own\, drop it off at Hunt’s for an additional charge\, or take one of Hunt’s Photo Education’s film developing classes.) We will then reconvene about a month later for an image review\, where attendees will be able to submit a small handful of images that they took during the workshop for review.\n\nPlease note: As mentioned above\, these workshops are designed for film cameras. Attendees do NOT need to have extensive experience shooting film\, but should own and use a film camera. (It’s ok to bring a digital camera\, but the emphasis of this workshop is analog photography.)

SUMMARY:Print Review Monthly: Printing in Black & White
DESCRIPTION:Introduction on Printing in Black & White- Wednesday April 8th\, 6:30pm ET • Online! \nPrint Review- Wednesday April 15th\, 6:30pm ET • Hunt’s Melrose or Online! \nThe printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product. \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Printing in Black & White! \nBlack & White printing is classic. It evokes in us certain emotions\, opinions\, senses\, and more. \nPrinting in black & white can also require more forethought. By planning out one’s shot in advance and seeing in black & white\, the photographer has more opportunity to edit in black & white with intent. That being said\, black & whites can also be produced by happy accidents\, too! \nThis class will focus on editing for print in black & white and touch upon what images to consider that will make strong monochrome images. \nThis Print Review topic will meet for two sessions. In the first session\, we will discuss the topic– some of the key differences between paper surfaces– and present a variety of options for you to have your image printed. In between sessions 1 and 2\, attendees will independently process 1-2 images and submit them to the instructor for printing. Educator Paul Nelson will produce a recorded image review\, discussing paper options\, editing suggestions\, and more\, to be sent back to you leading up to the second session. Paul will then print images for the class. In the end\, you will receive a print of one of your edited images up to 13×19″ in size. (Please note: We are happy to make a larger or additional print outside of the class for an additional fee!) \nJoin us for an informative Printed Review class! DESCRIPTION:Educators Paul Nelson and Henry Marte lead this fun and challenging workshop that delves into dragging the shutter\, motion\, and other creative lighting effects for portraits! Dragging the Shutter is a technique used where we keep the shutter of the camera open for longer in order to create a sense of movement. It is achieved using a combination of lighting tools and can create a myriad of effects where every photo is a unique creation! We will also work on other fun creative lighting techniques and tools\, including projection mounts\, fresnels\, gobos\, and adding artificial smoke to create depth.\nYou do not need to have any prior knowledge of how to achieve these effects. \nWe will specifically be using Nanlite and Aputure LED lights and Westcott strobes\, but the concepts can apply to any lights you own. \nThis will be a fun day of portraits and not to be missed!

SUMMARY:Creating Cyanotypes Workshop- Hunt's Photo\, Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we dive into a workshop that will quite literally bring you back to the days of film and hand-printing!\nCyanotypes are quite literally BLUE prints that can be simply made by placing a negative on top of a piece of coated paper (or other material) under UV light (or the sun) for a period of time. Once washed in water\, the resulting print produces a brilliant blue image on a white background.\nWe will begin this workshop with a prerecorded session where we will discuss the process\, materials needed\, and the preparation to be working with the cyanotype chemistry (see notes below). We will also discuss how to create a digital negative. For this workshop\, we will be creating our own digital negatives from an inkjet printer\, so you don’t actually need a negative and you don’t need a printer\, as we will be printing them in the store. Finally\, we will also discuss what to print on. Because we will have the ability to coat a material\, be it paper or fabric\, you can use a variety of printing surfaces\, which will elaborate on.\nPlease note: This session will be recorded\, so if you’re signing up last minute\, you can still watch it!\nDuring the workshop\, we will dive into all these elements. We will go through the process of coating (and drying) papers and fabrics\, creating test and final prints\, and discussing additional elements to change the look of our final prints. This is a unique workshop that will emphasize creativity and process.\nA few items of note:\n• In this workshop\, we will be utilizing cyanotype chemistry\, consisting of ferric ammonium citrate (for light sensitivity) and potassium ferricyanide (for color). As described by the chemistry company Photographers Formulary\, “…[Potassium Ferricyanide] is not particularly toxic… [unless] placed in a strong acid solution; however\, strong acid is not used in the cyanotype process.”\n• Because we will be working with chemistry\, you must follow all instructions given regarding chemistry and personal protective equipment.\n• Because this chemistry can stain\, we will be taking precautions and wearing gloves. We strongly recommend bringing an apron\, one that you won’t mind if it changes colors.

SUMMARY:Online: Special Guest Series- Hollywood Lighting in the Style of George Hurrell with Bobbi Lane
DESCRIPTION:George Hurrell was the greatest Hollywood Glamour photographer\, establishing the style in the early 30’s by photographing publicity images of the movie stars for MGM. Hurrell sculpted with light\, chiseling the subject’s features with bright highlights and deep shadows that created mystery and depth. He used large focusing fresnels (pronounced “fre-nel”)\, the same ones the movie studios still use today and photographed the major stars in Hollywood: Bogart\, Crawford (his favorite model)\,  Davis\, Deitrich\, Harlow\, “Bojangles”\, Gable\, Cooper\, Garbo\, Hepburn\, Tracy\, and more! From 1980 until 1992\, Hurrell rented Bobbi Lane’s studio in Los Angeles\, bringing in lighting along with furniture and props\, continuing to photograph the biggest stars of the day- Harrison Ford\, Arnold Schwarzenegger\, Diana Ross\, Queen\, the Talking Heads\, Liam Neeson\, Johnny Mathis\, Paul McCartney and many more. \nThis online seminar will cover Hurrell’s history and background as a painter and how he developed into a photographer. Bobbi will examine his techniques in lighting as well as his completing his concept of his subjects. Hurrell’s attention to detail was superb\, and she will show images he made during the time he photographed in Bobbi’s LA studio. \nCome learn this beautiful and fascinating style from one of the few that worked with the photographic master George Hurrell! \n  \n  \nAbout Bobbi Lane and Lee Varis \nBobbi Lane and Lee Varis\, accomplished photographers and educators with over 90 years of combined experience\, are excited to share their expertise in their workshops and presentations. Bobbi\, known as the “Mistress of Light\,” is celebrated for her creative portraiture and has been recognized by Photo District News as one of the top workshop instructors. Her passion for teaching and mastery of lighting techniques makes her a sought-after mentor. Lee\, the “Sultan of Skin\,” is a renowned photo-illustrator whose work includes iconic movie posters such as Silence of the Lambs and Star Trek. With his deep knowledge of digital imaging and creative photo illustration\, he inspires photographers to push their artistic boundaries. Together\, Bobbi and Lee lead immersive photography workshops and adventures worldwide\, providing participants unique opportunities to refine their skills in diverse and inspiring locations. \n  \n  \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. SUMMARY:Print Review Monthly: Printing Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Introduction on Comparing Papers- Wednesday March 4th\, 6:30pm ET • Online! \nPrint Review- Wednesday March 11th\, 6:30pm ET • Hunt’s Melrose or Online! \nThe printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product. \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Printing Flowers! \nEveryone wants to print flowers. There is such a mass appeal of flowers for such obvious reasons\, including their impermanence and their vibrancy of color. Therefore\, it only makes sense that flowers should be printed to display that level of vibrance for a long period of time! In this session\, we will focus our energies on not only the editing process\, but choosing the right surface of paper and size of paper. Among the topics discussed matte vs. glossy papers\, the importance of textured papers\, the illusive rice papers and natural/eco-friendly papers\, printing with borders and considering creating alternative borders\, and more! We will really be digging deep to think about what we are doing\, why we’re doing it\, and what we want to do!

SUMMARY:Online: An Introduction to Digital Printing (Printing with Lightroom)
DESCRIPTION:If you own a printer\, are considering purchasing one\, or even just want to learn a little bit more about the printing process\, this class is for you! \nIn this class\, Hunt’s Photo Educator and printing enthusiast Paul Nelson will walk you through the basics of Digital Printing\, including: \n• Basic computer settings for print on both Mac and PC \n• The advantages (and disadvantages) of printing using different programs for printing (and why Adobe Lightroom Classic is one of the best options) \n• The differences between printer models \n• Color management tools and settings \n• Editing Suggestions \n• Troubleshooting (Paul has extensive knowledge of this!) \nThis class also focuses on printing using Lightroom specifically. Being able to print from Lightroom allows you to complete all of your tasks specifically in one rather than multiple programs. Even if you do not own or use Lightroom\, the concepts within this class are fairly global and these concepts can be translated to other programs. We will also discuss printing using these other programs. \nWe LOVE printing! If you are at all curious about why printing is the most important thing in the world\, join this class and you’ll soon figure it out! \n  \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 48 hours prior to the class time with that same information.\nLayout of the class\nThe class will begin promptly at the time listed. The majority of the class–roughly 1 hour– will be a presentation on the topic\, followed by a short Q&A. During the class\, you are welcome to type in questions in the Chat box if you have specific questions as they are asked. We will do our best to answer those questions\, but if not\, feel free to ask them at the end.\n?You Are Being Recorded? (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! The video will be available for download about 24-hours after the class for all attendees\, so don?t worry about taking unending notes. We will send this link attendees to download and rewatch at any time. In addition to this\, we will generally send out a PDF of the presentation (when applicable) and handouts on the topic. If handouts and PDFs are included\, we will send it out with the link for the video.\nCan’t attend the class? \nIf you can’t attend the class but still want to download the video\, no problem: Just sign up for the class! You don’t need to attend and we will send the video and PDF link the next day!

SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Creative Lighting for Portraits- Hunt's Photo\, Melrose
DESCRIPTION:It’s the winter time and thus many portrait photographers flee back to the warm comforts of their studios. But that doesn’t mean that you have to resort to creating boring portraits! \nEducators Paul Nelson and Henry Marte lead this fun workshop on lighting\, posing\, backgrounds\, and more!  We will work on creativity using simple tools and techniques\, whether to create dramatic lighting\, a moody ambiance\, or unique headshots. We will also employ the use of props and backgrounds to make your images stand out from the basic studio portraiture! \nWe will specifically be using Nanlite and Aputure LED lights\, but the concepts can apply to strobes and speedlights. \nThis will be a fun day of portraits and not to be missed!

SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Workshop: Water Drops (and more!)
DESCRIPTION:Water Drop Photography is a style wherein one drops a liquid into another liquid and photographs it in a way that emphasizes the “unseeable”–little droplets\, the corona of the drop\, and more. This style uses high speed flash in order to stop the action instead of fast shutter speed. It is a simple technique that can be achieved with even the most rudimentary gear\, but it can produce infinitely different results. Just like snowflakes\, you’ll never be able to duplicate a water drop.\nIn this workshop\, we will begin with a live demo describing the gear\, settings\, set-up\, and execution of water drop photography. We’ll then dive right in\, beginning simply and then moving on to not just water droplets\, but also other items! Photographers of all skill levels are welcome\, but one should come with patience!\nTwo important notes: We will be using flash in this workshop. You do not need to own a flash\, and we may use only what we have anyway\, but you are welcome to bring one if you have one in order to understand how to replicate it on your own. Also\, to minimize on gear and space\, we will be working in groups of two. (Trust us\, it’s easier!)

SUMMARY:Printed Vision: Making a Fine Art Print- Hunt's Melrose or Online! (Image Review)
DESCRIPTION:The printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product. \nThis Printed Vision Session: Making a Fine Art Print\nTo print fine art or not to print fine art: That is the question. What does it mean to make a fine art print? What photographic papers define fine art? What editing choices should we make to get through the emotions of the print? How do we calculate our editing with our paper choices? \nIn the first session\, we will discuss the topic and elaborate on editing with examples. This will include discussion of exposure\, dynamic range and color\, but also deeper points\, such as noise reduction\, image sharpening and grain. In between sessions 1 and 2\, attendees will independently process 1-2 images and submit them to the instructor for printing. The instructor will send back a video image review discussing what you did and how to improve your edits for print. The instructor will then print one of the images to be displayed in the Print Review\, which will take place both in-person and online\, in case you cannot attend live. In the end of each session\, you will end up with a print up to 13×19” on Fine Art paper to take home with you. (We print on Moab\, Hahnemuhle\, and Canson fine art papers.) \nJoin us for this quintessential Printed Vision class! \nAbout our Printed Vision Classes \nOur Printed Vision sessions are excellent for anyone: \n• That wants a little help with editing before they get a print \n• That does print but has print-related questions \n• A person that prints often and wants to try a different paper \n• Someone with no knowledge of printing that just wants to get a print! \nReceiving Your Print\nAfter the class\, your print can either be mailed to you or picked up at one of our Hunt’s Photo store locations. \nRegistering and what is needed\nAfter you register for this class\, you will receive a confirmation email that will include information about how to access the online class\, including an online ID code that you will need to get into the class. Make sure to save this information. We will also send a reminder email about 24 hours prior to the class time with that same information. \n“You Are Being Recorded” (And Other Note Related Items)\nWe will be recording this class! \nKeep the conversation going: At the conclusion of this workshop\, you will also have the opportunity to register for additional sessions where we will review prepared pages from your book for feedback. These review sessions will occur over the course of months and can be recorded\, in case you cannot attend live. \nA note about printing: Please be aware\, we will NOT be printing books in this class\, only showing the process. The printing will be up to you!
