SUMMARY:Developing Black & White Film- Hunt's Photo Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we discuss all the key elements of loading and developing film\, and get you to develop a roll on your own! In this workshop\, we will show you how to load film into a developing tank\, discuss the elements of the chemistry involved\, and other various aspects. Because of the many variables\, we will only be using one specific type of developer\, but we will discuss the possibilities of other developers available and their advantages. \nPlease note: This class caters to black & white film developing only! We will also have a color film developing class. All film classes can be found here. \nWe will provide tanks\, reels\, chemistry\, and basically anything that you need to develop your film. All you will need to have is a roll of film to develop. (Make sure that roll is black and white and NOT C-41 black and white\, as that cannot be developed in black and white chemistry!) \nWe will also include a free scan of your film after it has been processed! Since your film will be wet at the end of the session\, you will leave it to dry so it can be scanned. The digital scans will be sent directly to your email address. If you would like the negatives to be shipped to another store for pickup\, we can gladly do that!

SUMMARY:Studio Personality Portraits of Children with Paula Swift- Hunt's Photo Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join Master Photographer\, Photographic Craftsmen\, Certified Professional Photographer – Paula Swift owner of Paula Swift Photography\, Inc. in Sudbury\, MA as she shares her fun and stress-free approach to studio portraits of children. Paula loves to create fun and creative natural portraits of children using simple studio lighting and backdrops.  She lets children be themselves.  This could be by incorporating a hobby\, sport or anything that they love into their session or just capturing their authentic smiles and laughter in front of her camera. \nWe laugh\, giggle\, sing\, dance and pull out all the stops to get children to be who they truly are. Some sessions the focus is on their faces and expressions\, so clothing is kept simple and classic making it a fun and stress free way to capture your kids portraits in a modern yet timeless way. Meanwhile other sessions include a sport or hobby. This helps to tell their story of who they are and to celebrate their uniqueness. Paula believes every child is unique and these types of portraits help to capture who they are…and how we will look back and remember that fleeting time of that age they were photographed.\n\n \nThis class will cover: \n• Studio lighting and camera gear used\n• How it’s important learn about the child(ren) you will be photographing\n• How to direct children during the session\n• To encourage children to be themselves during a session\n• Learn how to sit back and watch a moment happen\n• How to keep the session fun and engaging for each child \n  \nPlease note: Certain special workshops\, such as this one\, are non-refundable. If you need to cancel more than 10 days prior\, you can receive a 50% credit towards a class in the future. We do not offer credits within 10 days of the workshop. \n  \nAbout Paula: \nPaula Swift\, M.Photog\, Cr.\, CPP started her portrait photography business in Framingham\, MA in 2004 and then moved into a new studio in Sudbury\, MA in December 2013. SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Urban Portraits in Lowell with Natural Light (and Flash!)
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for another entry in our series of portrait workshops where we will be utilizing the natural\, urban environment to work into our portraits. Brick buildings and cityscapes will all work into our compositions as we create a more working class feel in our portraits–a very unique look. To a certain extent\, these will be environmental portraits where the environment plays a role in creating the scene. Utilizing your environment in photographs is key to creating a fun portrait shoot! We will emphasize creating these portraits using available light through subject placement and composition with the aid of diffusers and reflectors. We will then separately demonstrate reasons to add in flash.\nWe will begin photographing late afternoon in the sunlight (and shade) and work to sunset along the Merrimack River along the Riverwalk in Lowell. We will be using Westcott (FJ80\, FJ200\, FJ400) strobes/flashes as well as Westcott diffusers\, both of which are excellent brands for creating stunning portraits.\nThis workshop will be co-taught by Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson and professional photographer Henry Marte. Both have extensive portrait experience and will take you through the full process\, from naturally lighting a subject\, to how to properly expose while using strobes\, to how to actually use the strobes themselves!\nPhotographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nAbout Henry Marte\nHenry is a published photographer and credited filmmaker. He specializes in various forms of photography\, including portrait\, events\, headshots\, drone\, and commercial photography. Other than attending MassArt’s Documentary Film School\, he is almost entirely self taught. He runs a small media production studio called Marte Media\, based out of Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. Some of his clients include Spartan Race\, UMass Lowell\, Phillips Academy\, Navigation Brewing Company\, and more. Originally from NYC\, he now calls Lowell\, Massachusetts his home. He enjoys New York style pizza\, walks with a camera\, and hiking to active volcanoes.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Lighting on Location in Lowell
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for another entry in our series of portrait workshops where we will be showing how to light on location using natural light and supplemental light\, whether it’s flash or LED! We will utilize the natural environment of our location to work into our portraits\, and then\, when necessary\, use lights to make it something spectacular. This workshop is a great opportunity for both beginner and intermediate photographers\, as we’ll build examples of where to place subjects\, when to use lighting\, and what lighting we think works best for that environment. (Lighting will be provided!) \nOur workshop will take place at the Western Ave Studios in Lowell\, which has many unique indoor and outdoor elements that will work well for our portraits.\nFor gear\, we will be using both Westcott (FJ80\, FJ200\, FJ400) strobes/flashes as well as Westcott diffusers as well as a mix of Nanlite and Aputure LED lights\, all of which are excellent brands for creating stunning portraits.\nThis workshop will be co-taught by Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson and professional photographer Henry Marte. Both have extensive portrait experience and will take you through the full process\, from naturally lighting a subject\, to how to properly expose while using lighting\, to how to actually use the lights themselves!\nPhotographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

SUMMARY:Print Review Monthly: Comparing Papers
DESCRIPTION:The printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product. \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Comparing Papers! \nWhat does it look like on Matte Paper? What does it look like on Glossy Paper? Why would I print it on one versus the other? What does the paper bring to my image?\nLeading up to the date of the session\, you’ll receive a pre-recorded video that discusses\, among other things some of the key differences between paper surfaces and present a variety of options for you to have your image printed. Then\, we will literally print the image two times so we can see the difference\, getting to the root of the answers.\nIn the end\, you will receive TWO prints of your edited image up to 8.5×11″ in size. (Please note: We are happy to make a larger print outside of the class for an additional fee! However\, we will review these in class to see how they look before making them larger!) \nJoin us for an informative Printed Vision class! \nA Note About The Printed Vision Series \nOur Print Review Monthly is a chance to continue the print conversation over the course of many months. For this class\, you can either choose a single session OR sign up for three months at a discounted rate.  You do not need to attend 3 consecutive sessions and may attend whenever it’s convenient. Choosing this option is excellent to keep the printing conversation going! However\, please note that the sessions expire after one year. These sessions are excellent for anyone: \n• Someone that wants a little help with editing before they get a print \n• Someone that does print but has print-related questions \n• A person that prints often and wants to try a different paper \n• Someone with no knowledge of printing that just wants to get a print! \n  \nCome check out why printing is the best thing to do for your photography! \n  \nIn-Person or Online \nThis class will be taking place in-person in our Melrose store location and online\, in case you cannot attend live. If you cannot attend live\, your print can either be mailed to you or picked up at one of our Hunt’s Photo store locations.

SUMMARY:Creating Cyanotypes Workshop- Hunt's Photo\, Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we dive into a workshop that will quite literally bring you back to the days of film and hand-printing!\nCyanotypes are quite literally BLUE prints that can be simply made by placing a negative on top of a piece of coated paper (or other material) under UV light (or the sun) for a period of time. Once washed in water\, the resulting print produces a brilliant blue image on a white background.\nWe will begin this workshop with a preliminary webinar where we will discuss the process\, materials needed\, and the preparation to be working with the cyanotype chemistry (see Misc notes above). We will also discuss how to create a digital negative. For this workshop\, we will be creating our own digital negatives from an inkjet printer\, so you don’t actually need a negative and you don’t need a printer\, as we will be printing them in the store. Finally\, we will also discuss what to print on. Because we will have the ability to coat a material\, be it paper or fabric\, you can use a variety of printing surfaces\, which will elaborate on.\nPlease note: We will record this introduction\, so if you’re signing up last minute\, you can still watch it!\nDuring the workshop\, we will dive into all these elements. We will go through the process of coating (and drying) papers and fabrics\, creating test and final prints\, and discussing additional elements to change the look of our final prints. This is a unique workshop that will emphasize creativity and process.\nA few items of note:\n• In this workshop\, we will be utilizing cyanotype chemistry\, consisting of ferric ammonium citrate (for light sensitivity) and potassium ferricyanide (for color). As described by the chemistry company Photographers Formulary\, “…[Potassium Ferricyanide] is not particularly toxic… [unless] placed in a strong acid solution; however\, strong acid is not used in the cyanotype process.”\n• Because we will be working with chemistry\, you must follow all instructions given regarding chemistry and personal protective equipment.\n• Because this chemistry can stain\, we will be taking precautions and wearing gloves. We strongly recommend bringing an apron\, one that you won’t mind if it changes colors.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Urban Portraits with Natural Light (or Flash!)
We will then separately demonstrate reasons to add in flash.\nWe will begin photographing late afternoon in the sunlight (and shade) and work to sunset in the picturesque brick of downtown Lowell.

SUMMARY:Online: Multi-Session Series- Creating Books and More: Preparing Images\, Creating Designs\, and Emphasizing Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This is a 2-part class that will meet on the dates listed above\nThat title is exhausting! And so it can also feel making a book\, a zine\, a calendar\, or even a print! There’s so much to the printing process that is foreign and never covered in standard courses\, and so in this course\, we will begin to cover some of the basics.\nIn this two session course\, we’ll discuss the following topics:\n-Organization- How to use your software (ANY software) to work for you to prepare your vision\n-Culling your images- Reducing the quantity of images you use to strengthen your end result\n-Pre-visualization- Begin to develop your storytelling journey by letting the images guide you!\n-Exporting & Importing- How do we bring the images out of the program we’re using and at what settings\n-Online options and standalone programs for building books\, calendars\, and more.\n-Layouts- What are some of the basic design elements that we can employee? What can be automated and what do we have to do from scratch?\n-Storytelling- This is the glue that holds the book together! (Figuratively\, not literally.) How do we keep interest for 20 pages? 50 pages? 100 pages? \nMuch of the conversation in this course will be demonstrated using Adobe Lightroom Classic\, but other programs (Capture One\, Apple Photos) can also be discussed and are just as applicable. \nKeep the conversation going: At the conclusion of this workshop\, you will also have the opportunity to register for additional sessions where we will review prepared pages from your book for feedback. These review sessions will occur over the course of months and can be recorded\, in case you cannot attend live. \nA note about printing: Please be aware\, we will NOT be printing books in this class\, only showing the process. The printing will be up to you!

SUMMARY:Lighting Masterclass: A Night with Jerry Ghionis (sponsored by Westcott)
DESCRIPTION:Jerry Ghionis\, Westcott Top Pro\, Nikon Ambassador\, and the most awarded photographer of WPPI\, will teach you how to understand light in the simplest way you’ve ever heard and seen it explained. Whether you’re a portrait\, wedding\, fashion or boudoir photographer\, this seminar will help simplify your approach and help realize that technically\, lighting is not the most important entity in a photo but the subtraction of light. This is your chance! If you purchase one of the newly announced Westcott Ice Light 3\, you’ll be able to participate in an additional session with Jerry Ghionis himself immediately following the seminar—a rare opportunity to watch his creativity in action. Watch as he transforms ordinary scenes into breathtaking imagery\, all while sharing his secrets and techniques. To claim your place in this experience\, purchase your Ice Light 3 before 6:30 PM on the night of Jerry’s masterclass. Hurrell spent the last 12 years of his life shooting in Bobbi’s studio\, during which he experienced a revival of popularity for his classic style. \nIn this workshop\, you will be learning from her first-hand experience Hurrell’s creative approach to lighting\, styling\, and posing! Hurrell “sculpted’ his subjects with large Tungsten movie lights. In today’s world\, we will use LED lights (courtesy of Nanlite) with Fresnel (pronounced “fre-nel”) and Barn Door attachments. \nThis is a fascinating and dynamic workshop with models dressed and styled in Hollywood fashion. Over two days\, we will cover lighting\, posing and directing\, and how to use this style in the modern world. \nAfter hands-on shooting\, Lee Varis will teach Lightroom and Photoshop retouching techniques that allow you to replicate Hurrell’s classic creamy B&W tones and smooth skin\, without the hours of tedious re-illustration for which he was famous. \nIncluded in this workshop is an introductory webinar on the Hollywood Lighting style to be held on Tuesday March 11th at 7pm EST. (If you can’t attend live\, it will be recorded\, but you should watch it prior to the workshop.) \n  \nAbout Bobbi Lane and Lee Varis \nBobbi Lane and Lee Varis\, accomplished photographers and educators with over 90 years of combined experience\, are excited to share their expertise in their workshops and presentations.
